Design Packaging for Disney x Coach Collab

The long-anticipated collaboration between Disney and Coach hit stores everywhere this past week and people are losing their minds. We were excited to be one of the first to preview Coach’s SoHo store, which was the first to carry the limited-edition merchandise last Friday. This exclusive store was designed by Katie Grand, Editor-in-Chief of Love magazine, and Stuart Vevers, Creative Director of Coach.

Coach partnered with Design Packaging, tapping into our creative production expertise to bring the Disney x Coach retail packaging program to life from shopping bags to rigid boxes, to envelopes with ribbon closures all featuring the lovable, yet unapologetic, Mickey Mouse.

Vevers tapped Disney to help celebrate 75 years of Coach. “Mickey Mouse is one of my earliest memories of American pop — his nostalgic charm, cheekiness, individuality, and inherent cool make for the ultimate American icon.” This comes on the heels of Coach’s redirection to bring a more youthful approach to its brand. Vogue.com explains, “For inspiration, he turned to the cheeky Mickey of the ’70s and ’80s, ‘Mickey in a cool context,’ as he puts it. ‘Madonna with the ears, Emilio Estevez in The Outsiders. Something tougher!’” The packaging for this collaboration was no exception.

Coach and Disney illustrators worked together to help elevate the Mickey image while keeping the nostalgic, child-like qualities that are so dear to our hearts. Opting out of bright and vivid colors, the Disney x Coach packaging featured an overall embossed black-on-black design, punctuated by an illustration of Mickey. The “Disney x Coach” on the packaging was hot stamped in black foil, allowing it to gleam in movement, giving the Mouse of the hour all the attention. Mickey himself was hot stamped in white and red foils, allowing him to pop out of the packaging (pun intended). Vanishing handles with black cotton twill allowed the shopping bags to provide a flat canvas for Mickey, while the interior was printed with classic Coach saddle color. The Disney x Coach rigid boxes required a more minimal touch, still donning the black-on-black look, but without Mickey.

Just to add a little more Disney magic to the Coach experience, you can download the Coach app and strike a pose with Mickey, or be in a video with him! This latest collab has everyone singing M-I-C-K-E-Y C-O-A-C-H!
